Lamborghini Countach
Name
The word countach (pronounced [Kunt] (listen)) is an exclamation of astonishment in the local language, Piedmontese generally used by men, seeing an extremely beautiful woman. The term is often considered the equivalent of an obscenity excited in English. It can also be considered the verbal equivalent of a wolf-whistle. [Citation needed]
Name Countach stuck when Nuccio Bertone first saw "Project 112" in his studio. [Citation needed] The prototype was presented to the world the 1971 Geneva Motor Show. Most previous Lamborghini names have been associated with bulls and bullfighting.

Lamborghini Countach LP500 seen from the top to show its futuristic style.
The Countach was designed by Marcello Gandini of the Bertone design studio, the same architect who designed the studio Miura. Gandini was then a young, inexperienced designerot very experienced in practice, the ergonomic aspects of automobile design, but at the same time without being bothered by them. He produced a design quite striking. The Countach shape was wide and low (42.1 inches), but not for long. His body angular wedge was almost completely consisting of flat panels and trapezoidal. There were curves, notably the line smoothly coke-bottle wing, but the overall look was strong.
Doors, a Countach trademark, were scissor doors: hinged at the front with horizontal hinges, so that the doors lifted and tilted forward. The main reason is tubular chassis of the car results in tubular door sills high and wide. It was also partly for style, and partly because the width of the car made conventional doors impossible to use in a confined space, even slightly. Care must be taken, even if, by opening the doors with a low roof overhead. poor rear visibility the car and thresholds across led to the adoption of a method of reversing the car drivers for parking by opening the door, sitting on the ledge, and reversing while looking over the back of the car from outside.)
The style of the prototype was progressively enhanced or cluttered (depending from his point of view) by the evolution of the car to improve its performance, handling, its docility and ability to meet the requirements. It started with the first production model, which included several vents which were found to be necessary to cool the engine adequately. These include the iconic NACA duct on the wing and the rear door on each side of the car. Car design changes ended with a large engine vent directly behind the driver, reducing the rear view. Later additions, including fender flares, spoilers, carburetor covers, and bumpers, progressively changed the aesthetic values of the car.
The Countach style and visual impression caused it became a design icon ideal for almost everyone except automotive engineers. The superior performance characteristics of later Lamborghini models (Such as Diablo, or Murcilago) has appealed to drivers of performance cars and engineers, but they never had originality or outrageousness that gave the Countach its distinction. The different impressions left by the various Lamborghini models have generated much debate and disagreements over what constitutes "classical" or "large" car design (elegant looks and style, vs. technical and engineering superiority).
Engine
Engine
The rear wheels are powered by a Lamborghini V12 engine mounted longitudinally with a traditional configuration central engine. For better weight distribution, the engine is done "backwards", the output shaft is at the front and the box speed is in front of the engine, the driveshaft running back through the motor housing to a differential at the rear. Although originally planned as a 5 liter powerplant, the first production cars used the Lamborghini Miura 4-liter engine. Progress further increased the displacement to 5 liters and then (in the "Quattrovalvole" model) 5.2 L four valves per cylinder.
All Lamborghini Countach Weber carburetors were fitted with six years until the arrival of 5000QV model, when the car became available in America, and used Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection. The European models, however, continued to use carburetors up the arrival of the Lamborghini Diablo, which replaced the legendary Countach.
Construction
The Countach used a skin of aluminum aircraft quality on a tubular space frame, as in a race car. This is expensive to build but is extremely strong and very light (despite its size, the car weighs about 1.400 kilograms (3,100 pounds). underbody tray was fiberglass.

Prototype LP500
A single prototype was built, the LP500 (the status 500 for the 5-liter displacement engine was designed to be used). Painted bright sunflower yellow, the car was a stunner in Salon de l'Automobile in Geneva in 1971. Sporting Gandini concepts original design, the design of the car needed a major change in production. In particular, small air inlets on the shoulders car Rear proved insufficient to cool the engine, and "air box" big balls were added in this position. Large NACA ducts were added on the sides to give additional air. The experimental car was also constructed of honeycomb aluminum sheets among other things, which was abandoned for production.
The car did not survive, it has been sacrificed in a crash test to gain European type approval, even if its construction is quite unlike production vehicles.
LP400
front side-LP400
LP400-side rear
The Countach went into production as the LP400 with a 4.0-liter engine. The first production Countach was delivered to an Australian in 1974. The first person to own the LP400 was D. Milne, who was a member of the Force Australian Defense Transportation Corps. [Citation needed] Externally, little has changed from the final form of the prototype except at the rear where conventional lights replaced the futuristic light clusters of the prototype. The style became a bit more aggressive than the original design Gandini, with great need ventilators and vents to keep the car from overheating, but the overall shape was still very elegant. The original LP400 mounted tire close enough at the time, but their narrowness and the slick style means that this version was the lowest drag coefficient of any Countach model and possibly the highest top speed. Many people like the look of this cleaning, the original model the coolest of all the Countach variants, and indeed it is simple, with smooth lines and few decorations. Even the emblems at the rear simply read "Lamborghini" and "Countach" free movement of motor and valve dimensions arrangement is found on most modern cars.
LP400
In 1978, a new model LP400 was introduced. Although the engine was slightly upgraded from the LP400 model, the most radical changes have been Outside, where the tires were replaced with much wider Pirelli P7 units, extensions and fiberglass wheel arch were added, giving the car the fundamental kept until the end of its production cycle. A spoiler-like option is available on the V deck, which, while improving high speed stability, reduced the top speed of 10 MPH. Most owners ordered the wing. Manipulating the LP400 has been improved by wider tires, which made the car more stable in turns. Aesthetically, some prefer ply lines while others prefer the original lines of the more aggressive later models, starting with the LP400. The standard emblems ("Lamborghini" and "Countach") were kept in the back, but an angular "S" emblem was added after the "Countach" on the right side.
There are three Countach LP400 series.
The first 50 series cars come with Campagnolo "Bravo" wheels in 1978 and 79. In 1978, very early cars have the steering wheel original LP400. Stewart Warner gauges small, 45mm carburetors and a lowered suspension (lowbody) parameter is a feature of this famous brand series first. Halfway through 1979, producing more gauges were used. 50 cars were built and one is noted in 1121100 *
Two series of these cars are recognized by their smooth finish curved / concave wheels while preserving the setting lowbody. 105 cars were built and the latter is known to be 1121310 *.
Three series It is alleged that the number Frame from 1121312, the available space in the cockpit was raised by 3 cm. These cars are known for their suspension medium elevated. 82 cars were built, and the latter is known to be 1121468 *
LP500
Lamborghini Countach 500S
1982 saw another improvement, but this time with a bigger, more powerful engine 5 liters, which has improved the performance to be more in line with Lamborghini somewhat exaggerated. The body has not been changed. This version of the car is sometimes called the LP5000S, which can cause confusion with the last 5000QV (Section below).
The LP500 is characterized 1985 as a toy named Sideswipe in the popular television series Transformers.
5000QV
In 1985, the engine has been further improved, bored and stroked to 5.2 liters and given four valves per cylinder (Quattrovalvole in Italian). The carburetors were moved up the sides of the engine to breathe better, unfortunately, this created a hump on the hood, reducing already poor rear visibility to almost nothing. Some body panels were replaced by Kevlar. In later versions of the engine, the carburetors were replaced by fuel injection.
For the first time, a specification model of the United States has been produced by the factory, with styling changes to allow bumpers to meet U.S. federal standards (large, bulky bumpers were used that for many people, ruined the smooth lines of the car). While this change was most noticeable on the outside, the most visible change under the hood was the use of fuel injection Bosch K-Jetronic, rather than the six Weber carburetors used in the Euro-spec model. The model 1985 U.S. had a base price of $ 99,500. Only two optional extras are available: an aerodynamic spoiler and a $ 5,500 sound system $ 7500. Of Many models have been sold with two options. Named in honor of the society 25 years anniversary 1988, the 25th Anniversary Countach was mechanically very similar to 5000QV but sported much changed style. "Airboxes" The back has been redesigned and enlarged, while the vents behind them were changed so that they ran front to back instead from right to left. In addition, a new air dam and side skirting, both with air intakes, were fitted and taillights have been restyled to be narrower, with colored plates of the body to replace the upper and lower lights back previous high. Style changes were unpopular with many, especially since the contributions have strakes in them that seemed to imitate those of Ferrari Testarossa, but they have improved engine cooling, a problem the Countach had always struggled with. He also presented 345/35R15 tires, the widest tire on a production car at the time. The anniversary was produced until 1990 when he was replaced by the Lamborghini Diablo.
Countach Walter Wolf
In 1975, Walter Wolf, a wealthy Canadian businessman and owner the Wolf F1 Racing in the 1970s, bought a LP400, but he was not satisfied with the LP400's engine and Dallara has asked the engineer Lamborghini chief at the time and the founder of the Italian F1 team Scuderia Italia in the mid-1980s, creating a special version High power to Countach. It was the code "1120148 NO 5" Countach prototype engine that produced 447 hp / 7900 rpm and a maximum speed assumed of 315 km "Walter Wolf special with the original" / h (201.1 mph). This model also introduced the upgraded wheels, Pirelli tires P7, large fender flares, spoilers front and rear of the LP400 model. It was painted red with black fender flares, and was named "LP500" as the standard model of the Countach 1980, and was the springboard that led to this model of production later. This first Walter Wolf car is currently in Japan. Two other Wolf Countach were produced, one painted blue, NO 1120202 (currently in Germany) and a navy blue, NO 1121210. (This machine was owned by Mr. Wolf for a long time, but was eventually sold.)

Countach replicas
In 1984, Rod Ladret of Ladret Design Studio located in Alberta, Canada began to produce and market a replica of the Countach. The form of the kit was carved in plaster, then a fiberglass mold was made of the form. The kits and cars Ladret Design Studio includes a built tube frame chassis with American V8 power plant. Ladret Design Studio built 141 of these replicas and clients industrialists who bought his fiberglass forms have built several thousand over the last two decades. In 2007 there are still several companies building kits forms-based Ladret built in 1984. In 1993, Ladret ceased manufacturing the Countach replica and moved on to other projects.
From 1985 about until the late 1990s, several companies replicated the Countach with varying degrees of success. In 1985, Gary Thompson and Pete Jackson hired a real Countach to an upscale Manchester car hire company and made a fiberglass mold of it. This mold has caused some number of manufacturers in the United Kingdom to produce their own replica Countach. Some were able to produce remarkably good replicas, including Paul Lawrenson Prova cars, Alan Booth Sienna Cars, Phil Cheetham of Mirage replicas, and replicas of Brightwheel. DC Supercars now Phil Cheetham producing molds and replicas Countach. [Citation needed]
