How can you know for sure that penny auctions can be statistically analysed? It's a bit obvious if you browse our statistical data carefully that there ARE patterns. From empyrical analysis you can find out what patterns there are:

  • Is the closing price related to a particular day and time?
  • Can you analyse the behaviour of the people bidding?
  • Do they have a strategy?
  • Is there a relation between the product and the final price or the number of bids necessarry to win?
  • If you look carefully for name repetition you will spot that many of the winners have won multiple times. That's a quite strong proof that strategy matters!
  • Whenever you have multiple auction that feature the same product, what can you find out? Of course, you can. Statistics will help you a lot! Does it change from site to site? Maybe. Again, statistics will help you to find out.

Putting Auction Theory to Work

Putting Auction Theory to Work

Providing a comprehensive introduction to modern auction theory and its important new applications, this book is written by a leading economic theorist whose suggestions guided the creation of the new spectrum auction designs. Aimed at graduate students and professionals in economics, the volume provides the most up-to-date analysis of traditional theories of "optimal auctions" as well as newer theories of multi-unit auctions and package auctions, and shows by example how these theories are used. It explores the limitations of prominent older designs, such as the Vickrey auction design, and evaluates the practical responses to those limitations. Paul Milgrom is the Leonard and Shirley Ely Professor of Humanities and Sciences and Professor of Economics, Stanford University. He is the author of more than sixty articles and co-author of the influential textbook, Economics, Organization and Management (Prentice Hall, 1992). Professor Milgrom is a pioneer in the economic theory of auctions and co-designer of the simultaneous, multiple round auction that the FCC adopted for selling radio spectrum licenses. Tres Seymour's lively story is humorously brought to life by Cat Bowman Smith's down-home illustrations. "Whee-oo " When Aunt Lou hears there's a county auction coming up, she can't contain her excitement (as her young niece observes). But when she and the family arrive at the auction site, Aunt Lou comes face to face with her long-standing rival, Miss Logsdon. One look makes clear that these ladies can't stand to lose to each other, even when bidding on such dubious treasures as old china, a stuffed groundhog, or a zinc tub. Aunt Lou's niece has her eye on a straw hat -- the spitting image of Daddy's -- which fits her better than her own hair. But can anyone outbid Aunt Lou and Miss Logsdon when they get going?

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A Vickrey auction is a type of sealedbid auction, where bidders submit written bids without knowing the bid of the other people in the auction. The highest bidder wins, but the price paid is the secondhighest bid. The auction was created by William Vickrey. This type of auction is strategically similar to an English auction, and gives bidders an incentive to bid their true value. Vickreys original paper considered only auctions where a single, indivisible good is being sold. In this case, the terms Vickrey auction and secondprice sealedbid auction are equivalent, and are used interchangeably. When multiple identical units (or a divisible good) are being sold in a single auction, the most obvious generalization is to have all winning bidders pay the amount of the highest nonwinning bid. This is known as a uniform price auction. The uniformprice auction does not, however, result in bidders bidding their true valuations as they do in a secondprice auction unless each bidder has demand for only a single unit.
