If you write songs, I'll bet that you have written one about the Moon. What causes the phases that we all know so well? Technically the Moon's phases are caused by the Moon revolving around our Earth, every 29.53 days or 12.36 times a year. That's why some years we have thirteen full moons. The Full Moon closest to the Autumnal Equinox is called the Harvest Moon.
New Moon
When it is a New Moon, the Moon is between us and the Sun. The Moon's back side is lit by the Sun, but we don't see that. We see darkness. This year the Harvest New Moon is Friday, September 18, 2009. 11:44 AM Pacific Daylight Time. This New Moon is the time to prepare for the energies and qualities of the Autumnal Equinox as well as Libra.
Full Moon
When it is a Full Moon, the Moon is on the other side of Earth. The Moon is fully lit reflecting this sunlight toward us. This year the Harvest Full Moon is Sunday, October 4, 2009 at 11:10 PM Pacific Daylight Time.
Don't forget, while the Moon is revolving around Earth, Earth with its tilt, is revolving around the Sun. The resulting seasonal changes cause one Moon phase to be distinct from another, often called Moon signs.
Farmers often plant crops according to the different Moon Signs as well as the phases of the Moon. Farmers Almanac is their guide.
Farmers Almanac was inspired by Poor Richard's Almanac written by Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the United States. Of interest, Benjamin Franklin was a self admitted astrologer and wrote about astrological events in Poor Richard's Almanac.
The Sun and the Moon
What we know presently is that while the Moon revolves around Earth, and Earth revolves around the Sun, the Sun revolves around a black dwarf star at the center of the Milky Way. This takes the Sun approximately 230 million years.
The Sun does not retrace its path when the Earth begins its new year of revolving around the Sun, which is marked by the Vernal Equinox, March 20th this year. Instead the Sun keeps traveling eastward.
The band of sky that the Sun moves in one Earth year was divided into twelve sections over 2500 years ago. Each section was named after one of the Zodiac Constellations known at that time. Libra is the seventh section.
As the Sun starts to move through each section, it's our mind that is most activated, with our physical body doing its bidding.
What about our emotions and our intuition? They don't get left out, do they?
No, the phases of the Moon are what stimulate our feelings and intuition, especially during the Full Moon.
Preparation for the Full Moon Cycle
The full moon that occurs during Libra's reign is October 4, 2009. The following details the 7 day preparation for the Full Moon Cycle which begins October 1, 2009:
Before
October 1 - Physical Day
October 2 - Emotional Day
October 3 - Mental Day
During
October 4 - Full Moon at 11:10 pm PDT
During the full Moon time (12 hours on either side) try to find time for reflection and contemplate how to find balance, your own center.
After
October 5- Mental Day
October 6- Emotional Day
October 7- Physical Day
On each on the three days after the full Moon, strive for the balance between the dualities of positive/negative aspects of the energies you receive.
Until the next New Moon, which is October 18, distribute the energies that you have been able to balance in service to those around you and the entire world.
