Robert Clive (1725-74), also known as Clive of Plassey, Clive of India and Baron Clive, was a British soldier, colonial administrator and statesman who founded British India.
In 1743 he joined the East India Company and was sent to Madras to work as a "writer" (clerk).
Clive was not to work for long as a clerk. During the War of the Austrian Succession, war broke out between the British and French in southern India. In 1751 Clive led a small force of 500 soldiers in a diversionary expedition against a French-Indian army in Arcot, the capital of the Carnatic (a region in southeastern India, between the Coromandel Coast and the Eastern Ghats). Clive succeeded in seizing Arcot and holding it for 53 days.
In 1752 he defeated the French in Trichinopoly and installed a pro-British ruler on the throne of the Carnatic. By 1753 French power in India had been reduced to a few lone outposts such Pondichery.
After a triumphal return to Britain, Clive went back to India for a second tour of duty.
Called on to avenge the so-called Hole of Calcutta, he marched on India's richest province, Bengal, and on January 2, 1757 he seized its capital, Calcutta.
On June 23, 1757, Clive had his greatest military triumph: the Battle of Plassey. He led a small British East India Company force of 2,400 soldiers into battle and defeated the much larger force of Indian and French forces (50,000 soldiers in all) fielded by the Nawab (ruling prince) of Bengal. The Nawab was removed from power and a pro-British puppet ruler was then put on the throne of Bengal.
This victory gave the British access to the enormous wealth of Bengal, which strengthened British military power and opened the way for the later British colonization of most of South Asia and later of other parts of Asia.
For the next three years, Clive was governor of Fort William, Bengal, but in fact he was the effective ruler of Bengal, giving directions to the puppet ruler. He also presided over a period of great spoliation and corruption, with vast amounts of public monies disappearing into private pockets.
In 1760 Clive returned to Britain a wealthy man, entered Parliament and was made "Baron Clive of Plassey".
In 1760 Clive returned once again to India and began a second governorship. During this period he reformed the civil service, enforced law and order, and re-established military discipline. He reined in corruption of officials by regulating their private trading and by limiting their ability to accept gifts.
Clive returned to Britain in 1767. He faced a storm of parliamentary attacks regarding the conduct of his first governorship during which so much corruption had been allowed to flourish.
Upon accusations that he was involved in the looting of the treasury of Bengal, Clive waxed indignant: "A great prince was dependent on my pleasure; an opulent city lay at my mercy; its richest bankers bid against each other for my smiles; I walked through vaults which were thrown open to me alone, piled on either hand with gold and jewels! Mr Chairman, at this moment I stand astonished at my own moderation."
Finally, in 1773, he was vindicated by the Parliament, which passed a unanimous resolution that found that Clive had "rendered great and meritorious service to his country".
In 1774 Clive committed suicide.
Robert Clive was an energetic and larger than life character. There is no doubt that during his first governorship he presided over a period of corruption. However, he was later responsible to reforming the administration and army in India.
Moreover, he has an undeniable place in history as the founder of the East Asia Company's rule in India, which was a forerunner of Britain's colonial rule in South Asia which endured until the mid-20th century.

British Columbia Gold Rushes $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The presence of gold in the region that is now British Columbia is mentioned in old legends that, in part, led to its discovery. The Strait of Anian, claimed to have been sailed by Juan de Fuca for whom todays Strait of Juan de Fuca is named, was described as passing through a land (Anian) rich in gold, silver, pearls and fur. Bergi (meaning mountains ), another legendary land near Anian, was also said to be rich in gold as well. Speculative maps of northwestern North America published before the area was mapped placed the legendary golden cities of Quivira and Cibola in the far inland northwest. No Spanish exploration parties in search of El Dorado, the golden one a reference to the legendary king of a lost golden city, are known to have ever reached British Columbia, although archaeological remains point to a brief Spanish presence in the Okanagan and Similkameen regions of the provinces Southern Interior. Fraser Gold 1858!: The Founding of British Columbia $15.01 The year 1858 proved to be the most eventful in western Canada as waves of American miners made their way to the Fraser River country, joining hundreds of Indians, Vancouver Island colonists, and former fur trade employees in the gold fields. The newcomers were some of the earliest pioneers of British Columbia. |

The Trail of 1858: British Columbia's Gold Rush Past $25.38 In 1858, over eight decades had passed since Captain James Cook claimed the shores of what would become British Columbia for the British crown, but European settlers had shown little interest in the new lands. The non-aboriginal population was only about 700. Then gold was discovered on the shores of the Fraser River and, overnight, the lonely outpost of empire was overrun by some 30,000 fevered gold-seekers. The raucous sourdough hordes were mostly American and treated the new territory as an extension of the United States. The fragile colonial administration in Victoria was overwhelmed and the territory's future as a British possession hung in the balance. But by the time the gold rush wound down a decade later, the colony of British Columbia had come into being and BC's destiny as a part of Canada was sealed. "In The Trail of 1858, BC Almanac" host Mark Forsythe and coauthor Greg Dickson augment their historical research with contributions from CBC listeners that give the gold rush story a personal, folksy feel. Making liberal use of historic photos, the authors celebrate memorable personalities from this epic time: the stern but sensible Judge Matthew Begbie; the peacemaking Chief Spintlum; Nam Sing, the first Chinese miner in the Cariboo; overlander Catherine Schubert; high-rolling miners Billy Barker and Cariboo Cameron; and a host of others. "The Trail of 1858" is a combination of fact and memory of the colourful characters who helped form this province; it is a book from which history truly jumps. |

British Columbia: Spirit of the People $24.94 In 2008, BC celebrates the founding of the Crown Colony of British Columbia and 150 years of cultural diversity, community and achievement. "British Columbia: Spirit of the People" celebrates this milestone, capturing the province's history, beauty and complex character in a lavish coffee-table book. The text, by respected historian Jean Barman, is ambitious in scope. Barman delves into the region's history, from the first humans to arrive in British Columbia twenty thousand years ago to the promises and hopes of the twenty-first century, including the first contact between Indigenous peoples and newcomers; the legacy of the fur trade and gold rush; the contributions of immigrant cultures; the development of communities and urban centres and the flourishing of the arts. A rich selection of archival images depicting the province's past are paired with iconic and stunning colour photographs capturing the diversity of the modern landscape. From the large stretches of open range and grassland of the Southern Interior, to the rugged geography of the Kootenays and Coast Mountains, the verdant beauty of the Gulf Islands and the excitement of the province's cities and communities, BC's geography is extravagant. Images selected from the province's most talented photographers, including David Nunuk, Chris Cheadle and Vance Hannah, showcase this diversity. Like the province of British Columbia, with its remarkable history, characters, places and achievements, "British Columbia" is a remarkable book and an important addition to the library of every British Columbian. |

Diamonds, Gold, and War: The British, the Boers, and the Making of South Africa $19.91 Southern Africa was once regarded as a worthless jumble of British colonies, Boer republics, and African chiefdoms, a troublesome region of little interest to the outside world. But then prospectors chanced upon the world's richest deposits of diamonds and gold, setting off a titanic struggle between the British and the Boers for control of the land. The result was the costliest, bloodiest, and most humiliating war that Britain had waged in nearly a century, and the devastation of the Boer republics. "The New Yorker" calls this magisterial account of those years " an] astute history.... Meredith expertly shows how the exigencies of the diamond (and then gold) rush laid the foundation for apartheid." |
