A couple years ago most people really didn't consider what was in the food they were feeding their dogs. It wasn't until the huge scandal, dog food recalls, tainted ingredients from China, and nasty manufacturing process that people started to pay attention to what exactly they were feeding their pets, as they should. When you are entrusted with the care of a being that is dependent on the decisions you make then you should take the time to figure out the best decision possible for something as important as food.
When I'm looking at the list of ingredients for dog food the first thing I'll look for is if the food has any artificial preservatives, coloring, or fillers. Then I want to know the protein content and I can find that out by looking at the top five ingredients. If these top five ingredients are mostly meat products then I know it will have an ample amount of protein that dogs need to be healthy. Then I scan the rest of the ingredients looking for anything suspicious or controversial.
I chose the Blue Buffalo Chicken and Brown Rice for Seniors for evaluation. A list of the top five ingredients: deboned chicken, chicken meal, potato starch, turkey meal, whitefish meal. Right off the bat I see that there are four sources of protein out of the five top ingredients, which is a good sign. The first ingredient should what is the most content in the food but you have to take into account the fact that deboned chicken includes the water weight, so without the water this would be placed much farther down on the list. Chicken meal, turkey meal, and whitefish meal are all good readily available sources of protein for dogs. On top of that, whitefish is a good source of Omega oils which help a dog keep a healthy coat free from dry skin.
When we look at the rest of the list we find some strange ingredients like blueberries, cranberries, and barley grass. This is strange because these things aren't something you would normally associate with a dog's diet. But in the wild when a dog eats another animal that animal is usually an herbivore whose diet would consist of stuff like nuts, berries, and grass, so the wild dog would be getting nutrients through its prey. These nutrients are essential to a happy and healthy dog. Another thing you want to look for is any fillers. Fillers would be things like corn meal, oats, and wheat bran. There are some very low quality fillers that dog food companies use, like corn or wheat. These aren't easily digestible and give dogs stomach problems. The Blue Buffalo dog food does not have these cheap fillers, they use oats, which are quality, which is another plus. Some more things to look for are sources of Omega oils and vitamin supplements. The Blue Buffalo dog food does have these which is a major bonus, this will keep dogs healthy with all the vitamins they need.
You can see how taking a look at the entire list of ingredients would give you a good picture about the attitude of the company toward the health of your dog and tell you whether or not your really want to give them money or give their food to your dog.
I've used this Blue Buffalo dog food review to show you what you can look for with any brand to give your dog the healthy life he deserves.

Buffalo Bill and Sitting Bull: Inventing the Wild West $71.28 Army scout, buffalo hunter, Indian fighter, and impresario of the worldrenowned Wild West Show, William F. Buffalo Bill Cody lived the real American West and also helped create the West of the imagination. Born in 1846, he took part in the great westward migration, hunted the buffalo, and made friends among the Plains Indians, who gave him the name Pahaska (long hair). But as the frontier closed and his role in winning the West passed into legend, Buffalo Bill found himself becoming the symbol of the destruction of the buffalo and the American Indian. Deeply dismayed, he spent the rest of his life working to save the remaining buffalo and to preserve Plains Indian culture through his Wild West shows. This biography of William Cody focuses on his lifelong relationship with Plains Indians, a vital part of his life story that, surprisingly, has been seldom told. Bobby Bridger draws on many historical accounts and Codys own memoirs to show how deeply intertwined Codys life was with the Plains Indians. In particular, he demonstrates that the Lakota and Cheyenne were active cocreators of the Wild West shows, which helped them preserve the spiritual essence of their culture in the reservation era while also imparting something of it to white society in America and Europe. This dual story of Buffalo Bill and the Plains Indians clearly reveals how one West was lost, and another born, within the lifetime of one remarkable man. Author: Bridger, Bobby Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 504 Publication Date: 2002/01/01 Language: English Dimensions: 9.00 x 6.00 x 1.12 inches |

Buffalo Bill and the Indians or Sitting Bull`s History Lesson (DVD) $24.66 Robert Altman revisits American history--following the critical smash NASHVILLE--with this scathing indictment of celebrity and politics in the Wild West. Paul Newman (BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID) stars as Buffalo Bill Cody, a man who has parlayed his legend into a grand moneymaking scheme. Employing a group of talented gunslingers and horseback riders, Bill`s carnival show promotes an exaggerated view of American history. However, when the company recruits equally legendary Native American Chief Sitting Bull (Frank Kaquitts) and his interpreter, William Halsey (Will Sampson) to appear as defeated victims in the show, the lies begin to catch up with Buffalo Bill. While the appearance of President Grover Cleveland (Pat McCormick) further helps carve Bill`s name in history, it is revealed that Sitting Bull is not completely done with Bill. Altman`s adaptation of Arthur Kopit`s play contains his signature roaming camera and sprawling cast, as well as conveys a sarcastic, cynical tone that aims to debunk myths created by the real-life legends on which the film is based. As the manipulative Buffalo Bill, a man whose conscience finally catches up with him, Newman delivers a comical and impassioned performance, adding yet another memorable character to his, and director Altman`s, oeuvre. |
