One of the challenges that every dollar store business owner faces is to continually grow sales. They know that sales growth is a key indicator of the health of their business. Yet sales growth doesn't occur without focused efforts. Fortunately, with a little planning, some sales goals, and then taking action, sales growth will occur for your store. The real secret is to establish aggressive, yet realistic goals for sales increases and then to develop specific actions to achieve those goals.
If increasing total sales to a new higher level is the goal, then set goals by selecting specific departments to focus your efforts on improving. For example, possibly some consumable items in the health and beauty department are allowed to routinely run out of stock before a replenishment order is made. That practice will cost your dollar store business money. The corrective action would be to increase sales by ensuring to always have stock on hand of all of the day-to-day consumables to meet your sales needs at all times. It might also include establishing an emergency back stock to ensure there is always merchandise available while you develop an ordering strategy that maintains merchandise stock levels.
Possibly there has been some customer interest in purchasing household cleaners by the case. Your strategy to increase sales would be to test offering case lot sales on the most popular of the household cleaning items. Of course some advertising and promotion would go a long toward testing whether this idea would yield higher overall sales for your dollar store business.
Another strategy might be to increase snack and grocery sales. Possibly you could work an arrangement to purchase in-date shelf pull items at a discount. You could then offer those items at the dollar price point which would draw attention from budget minded grocery shoppers. Snack sales could be increased by offering a wider variety of snack items, or possibly putting together a monthly promotional display in the lobby of your store to drive sales and to introduce those new snack items to your shoppers.
Don't forget that in-store signage is critical to driving sales. Experiment with different signs, and larger or smaller fonts to test the affect. Add signage to the front windows. Possibly painting the windows during all major holidays would increase awareness of your store and thus increase traffic into your dollar store business. Test it and find out.
