Many different coins hold different values for many different reasons. Take for instance a 1997 American Silver Eagle. Face value is only $1.00 but since this coin is mostly silver it also has it's bullion value of about $25.00. Now add in the fact that this particular year the mint only made a very limited quantity of these coins, which adds demand value also. Demand value is what an investor or collector would pay, there is no market price for this, but you can see how a circulated one dollar coin can sell for up to $30.00 or $40.00. This how collecting the right coin can make you money faster.
Most circulated coins won't produce a good return on investment because of the fact that it is circulated. You will have to wait a very, very long time to see any profit from one. The best type of coin to buy is a certified, graded, numismatic coin. A numismatic coin, is a coin of the highest quality grade. When a coin is graded, it has been certified by a third party, showing that the coin is of a specific standard. The grading scale for coins are on a 70 point scale devised by Dr William Shelby for his famous work, "Penny Whimsy" on early large cents. 0 means that you can pretty much tell that it was once a coin, while 70 means that it is perfect.
So lets take the same 1997 American Silver Eagle. Lets say you picked it up at the bank in 1997. Sent it to ANACS, PCGS, or another Coin Grading Company and it came back MS 70. Your coin is now certified perfect. In 1997 this would have cost-ted you a total, with shipping, about $40.00. Now in 2010 a 1997 American Silver Eagle MS 70 sells for about $500.00. WOW, what an investment.
If you want to make money collecting coins, collect graded coins only. These coins hold there value in sealed capsule for a lifetime.
I bet your asking how do I sell these coins?
There are many ways to sell your coins. You can put your coins up for auction. There are sites on the internet like eBay, that make it very simple to sell your coins all over the world. Or if you know of a coin show, some times you can register as a vendor and sell your coins there.
