The 1987 Silver Dollar was first minted in 1986 although Congress first authorized its minting in 1985. The obverse design of this dollar coin is based on the U.S. Walking Liberty half dollar, an excellent collector's piece designed by Adolf Alexander Weinman, a German immigrant sculptor. The reverse side of the Eagle Silver Dollar is designed by John Mercanti, a sculptor for the United States Mint.

The front of the 1987 Silver Dollar has a Liberty walking towards the sunrise (with the sun on the bottom left). She's carrying branches of oak and laurel in her arms, which symbolize civil and military glory. Also surrounding her is a drape filled with the Stars and Stripes, also symbolic of the nation. In God We Trust is written on the bottom right with the date of the coin on the bottom. LIBERTY is on the top of the coin. The reverse side of this dollar has a bold heraldic eagle behind a shield. He's holding arrows on the left side and an olive branch on the right side. The thirteen stars are right about the eagle's head. The words E Pluribus Unum are on both sides of the head. The bottom has 1 OZ. PURE SILVER ONE DOLLAR inscribed. This description alone has contributed to making this silver dollar very much in demand.
