Gold prospecting and panning, much like using a metal detector, are great ways to have fun and possibly make extra money in the process. They are also great additions to a family vacation.
Panning should, first and foremost, be looked at as a fun activity, though it is possible you could strike it rich. Panning was brought into the American pubic mindset during the California Gold Rush in the mid-1800s and has remained ever since. Prospecting and panning are exciting because you never know exactly what you're going to find.
To begin prospecting and panning, you need a few things.
1. You need to know what you're doing, so you'll need to read a book on prospecting and panning if you're planning on going without a guide. There are many books that discuss prospecting and panning.
2. You need to have the proper gold panning equipment. This should not be too expensive, as there are plastic alternatives to the higher priced metal kits. A gold panning kit usually contains a pan (or several), a snuffer bottle (for sucking up flakes), glass vials and a jeweler's loupe (similar to a magnifying glass). Of course, not all of this panning equipment is absolutely necessary; some of it will just make your panning experience easier.
3. You'll need to know where to go. Prospecting and panning in most rivers will not produce gold. Some rivers used to be fruitful for prospectors, but they have been picked clean and there is very little left for today's prospector. With this in mind, seek out gold maps, which will tell you which rivers still contain gold and even which parts of the rivers you should explore. There are specialty retailers that sell these types of maps. In addition, there is a nascent movement among prospectors to begin tagging online maps with potentially fruitful panning locations. Be sure to look for more information about these maps as well.
There's a lot more to prospecting and panning successfully, though, but this is a good start.
