There is history in almost everything, and the concept of daylight savings time offers no exception to that rule. In fact, the entire concept was originally introduced to American culture by one of the founders of our country, Benjamin Franklin. It has a colorful history from the time it was first thought of during ancient times, to the way it currently helps us make the most of daytime hours during the winter.
While daylight saving time might be part of our culture today according to the "spring forward, fall back" methods of changing our clocks as the days become shorter, ancient civilizations adhered to the same type of principle on an annual basis, making sure there was plenty of time for farming, outdoor activities and other forms of sun worship.
However, on a more modern approach, it was Benjamin Franklin who introduced the concept of daylight saving time to the budding American nation as he traveled on an envoy to France. Franklin, in one of his letters back to the United States, took note of the fact that in Paris, they were able to conserve their use of candles by rising earlier in the day to make the most of sunlight. Upon receipt of the letter, the new government in the States considered implementing a tax on shutters and also rationing candles, or insisting people get out of bed earlier to compete with the robust French economy.
Franklin, who wanted to make sure taxes were not high for new Americans nor telling them what they could do and when they should do it, instead thought of the idea of changing the clocks and ultimately changing people schedules in order to subconsciously have Americans make the most of their days.
The modern concept of daylight saving time was actually proposed in 1895 by New Zealander George Vernon Hudson, who was an entomologist by profession. He believed if he had more daylight hours, he could collect more insects, instead of having to work in the dark during a great part of the year.
Daylight saving time was adopted by the United States federal government in its current form in 1918, after time zones were established across the country. Because of the expansion of the railroad and the current drive to go west, the government felt that it had to regulate and set time schedules, which up to that point had largely been set by individual communities, causing for much confusion and "crossed wires."
However, individual jurisdictions and states, contrary to current popular belief, can still decide if they wish to participate in daylight saving time and there are some areas that choose to take advantage of the "state's right" to dictate what time they decide to make their residents live by.
Currently, accurate clocks are reset twice a year in the fall and in the spring. The change in time is not honored by Arizona, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. For those areas that do participate, clocks are set back to standard time on the first Sunday in November and then pushed one hour forward the second Sunday in March before spring occurs in most of the country.

Franklin (Paperback) $35.3 As the treaties with the Delaware tribes and the forging of the Whetzel Trace opened central Indiana for settlement, the town of Franklin emerged from wilderness, echoing the development of newly christened Johnson County. Founded by Kentucky natives Simon Covert, Garret Bergen, and George King, the land that became Franklin was chosen because of ample waterways and the availability of game. Previously populated by Native Americans within the dense forest, the area was often overlooked because of flooding and harsh, thicketed landscapes. George King persuaded the Indiana Legislature to create Johnson County on December 31, 1822, before persuading the new county`s commissioners to establish the town of Franklin, named after Ben Franklin, as the seat of county government. |

Franklin and Lucy $13.99 Franklin Delano Roosevelt was arguably the greatest figure of the twentieth century. While FDR’s official circle was predominantly male, it was his relationships with women–particularly with Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd–that most vividly bring to light the human being beneath this towering statesman. It is no coincidence that Rutherfurd was with Roosevelt the day he died in Warm Springs, Georgia, along with two other close women companions. In Franklin and Lucy , acclaimed author and historian Joseph E. Persico explores FDR’s romance with Lucy Rutherfurd, which was far deeper and lasted much longer than was previously acknowledged. Persico’s provocative conclusions about their relationship are informed by a revealing range of sources, including never-before-published letters and documents from Lucy Rutherfurd’s estate that attest to the intensity and scope of the affair. FDR’s connection with Lucy also creates an opportunity for Persico to take a more penetrating look at the other women in FDR’s life. We come to see more clearly how FDR’s infidelity as a husband contributed to Eleanor’s eventual transformation from a repressed Victorian to perhaps the greatest American woman of her century; how the shaping hand of FDR’s strong-willed mother helped to imbue him with the resolve to overcome personal and public adversity throughout his life; and how other women around FDR, including his “surrogate spouse,” Missy LeHand, and his close confidante, the obscure Margaret “Daisy” Suckley, completed the world that he inhabited. Franklin and Lucy is an extraordinary look at the private life of a leader who continues to fascinate scholars and the general public alike. In focusing on Lucy Rutherfurd and the myriad women who mattered to Roosevelt, Persico paints a more intimate portrait than we have heretofore had of this enigmatic giant of American history. From the Hardcover edition. |

Franklin and Eleanor $9.99 Franklin Delano and Eleanor Roosevelt’s marriage is one of the most celebrated and scrutinized partnerships in presidential history. It raised eyebrows in their lifetimes and has only become more controversial since their deaths. From FDR’s lifelong romance with Lucy Mercer to Eleanor’s purported lesbianism—and many scandals in between—the American public has never tired of speculating about the ties that bound these two headstrong individuals. Some claim that Eleanor sacrificed her personal happiness to accommodate FDR’s needs; others claim that the marriage was nothing more than a gracious façade for political convenience. No one has told the full story until now. In this groundbreaking new account of the marriage, Hazel Rowley describes the remarkable courage and lack of convention—private and public—that kept FDR and Eleanor together. She reveals a partnership that was both supportive and daring. Franklin, especially, knew what he owed to Eleanor, who was not so much behind the scenes as heavily engaged in them. Their relationship was the product of FDR and Eleanor’s conscious efforts—a partnership that they created according to their own ambitions and needs. In this dramatic and vivid narrative, set against the great upheavals of the Depression and World War II, Rowley paints a portrait of a tender lifelong companionship, born of mutual admiration and compassion. Most of all, she depicts an extraordinary evolution—from conventional Victorian marriage to the bold and radical partnership that has made Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt go down in history as one of the most inspiring and fascinating couples of all time. |
