There is a Korean custom that involves giving gold rings to young children in order to wish them longevity, good health and fortune in life.

When a child has his/her first birthday party the usual gift that is given to the baby is a gold ring. The rings are almost all the time 24 karat gold rings. These rings are intended to be a small deposit for when the child grows up.

Today not so many people still offer gold rings at birthday parties. The guests have found another form in which to make presents: cash. It is usually slipped into the parents' sleeves. With the price of gold soaring this Korean custom is breaking down.

The families that still receive gold rings for their children often sell it in order to make some cash. Some parents though, feel guilty in selling their children's cash. In most homes there are about 5 to 20 rings stashed away for each child.

Gold has been an important symbol in the Korean life and has marked a series of life passages. At weddings people are expected to give gold jewelry and watches. When they retired, people used to get from their employees gold medals and gold key chains. These were intended to be sold when in need of cash or in the case of some emergency.

The ones that were the most affected of all were the jewelers. They claim that the sales for baby rings are down by half since the price of gold has reached new peaks. Customers keep going to buy baby rings but when they hear the price they seem reluctant so they buy a ring half the standard size or some other accessories or in the worst case they just turn around and leave.

The jewelers have tried to focus on lighter accessories like baby necklace or bracelets with bell (to prevent the baby from going missing). More and more jewelers now say that people have started to sell their gold rather than to buy new one.

Some think that the families will never give up all their children's baby rings. Gold has and will be a symbol of health, wealth and prosperity in Korea.
