Is your Store Half Full or Half Empty for Your Dollar Store Start Up?
For many new entrepreneurs who are about to undertake a dollar store start up, the actually investment has turned out to exceed their plans. The location took longer to find, or possibly they ended up spending more on site improvement than they had planned. In still other cases, it is possible they knew they were starting their dollar store underfunded. And for many of those who are starting a dollar store it seems like the logical place to cut corners is in the amount of dollar store merchandise to be carried initially. In some cases not only will the initial merchandise on display be too little, but there isn’t dollar store start up funding for the required first replenishment order.
These new owners aren’t worried. For them the store is still half full of merchandise. They don’t realize while they see the store as half full, their shoppers are seeing it as being half empty. The result; shoppers will go elsewhere to make purchases of the core dollar store merchandise they must have. And soon this new store is forgotten to by many.
If you are starting a dollar store, don’t allow this scenario to play out for you. Do not underestimate the importance of having proper dollar store merchandise levels during you dollar store start up. Then budget for a quick replenishment order to keep the shelves filled with the most in demand items. Don’t risk having customers take their purchases to your competitor because you didn’t start with enough inventory.
If you are starting a dollar store and startup funding is tight, stop. Double check your projections. Determine if additional funding is required. Possibly you need to downsize to match the available resources. Possibly you need to take a hard look at the amount required to setup your new store. For example moving from new to used gondola fixtures can save you thousands. Likewise merchandise costs can be reduced with a little legwork.
One creative step might be to check for secondary market sources of dollar store merchandise. While most will not have everything to totally stock your store, they may have many of the items you need. Examine the market for dollar store that are closing or downsizing. Often you can purchase their merchandise at deep discounts. Either of these options can create a sizable reduction in the funding for your opening merchandise inventory.
If you exhaust every option and still lack funding, consider bringing in a partner. If that option doesn’t work, then it is time to seriously consider delaying the startup until proper funding is in-hand.
To your success when starting a dollar store!
