Diamond Mining Techniques
Diamonds, the hardest naturally occurring material on earth, are forged only at the extreme pressures that exist deep in the Earth’s core and at the site of a meteor crash, in that single moment of impact. Because they’re so rare, naturally formed diamonds are the most sought after gem in the world. Here are some of the most common techniques people use to mine diamonds.
Open Pit Mining
Also called “strip mining” or “open-cast mining”, this technique requires the digging of large, open pits in the ground, so that miners are able to reach the diamond deposits hidden underground. Open pit mining is used in sites where the ground is too unstable to safely use tunneling techniques. Open pit mining is the most common and lucrative form of diamond mining and it has been a frequent target of environmentalist protests, as its large land displacement has the potential to harm the ecosystems surrounding it.
Hard-Rock Mining
As the name implies, hard-rock mining involves drilling vertical tunnels or shafts, often miles deep, into sites composed of hard rock. Horizontal tunnels are also dug so as to connect the various vertical shafts and various underground “rooms”. High-tech machinery and computer technology have made hard-rock mining less dangerous than it used to be, but the technique is still the most dangerous of the mining methods used today.
Placer Mining
Known also as alluvial mining, placer mining is the mining of secondary diamond deposits. Stones that end up in alluvial deposits tend to come from kimberlite rock formations. Rivers and streams erode these kimberlite formations and transport the diamonds downstream. Miners then excavate them using hydraulic pressure systems so you can purchase a San Diego diamond. Artisanal techniques are also used, in small scale, to dig for gems in alluvial deposits. These techniques involve traditional methods, like sifting through river mud with sieves or pans.
Marine Diamond Mining
Marine diamond mining is the newest method of diamond mining. Because of the high-tech equipment required, marine diamond mining did not become commercially practical until the 90’s. The technique involves drilling vertical and horizontal tunnels in the ocean floor. Underwater vehicles crawl along the seabed and dig for minerals and gems.

Placer Deposit $76.47 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In geology, a placer deposit or placer is an accumulation of valuable minerals formed by deposition of dense mineral phases in a trap site. The name is from the Spanish word placer, meaning alluvial sand. Types of placer deposits include alluvium, eluvium, beach placers, and paleoplacers. Typical locations for alluvial placer deposits are on the inside bends of rivers and creeks, in natural hollows, at the break of slope on a stream, the base of an escarpment, waterfall or other barrier, within sand dunes, beach profiles or in gravel beds. Mining Camps of Placer County $26.25 Everything in Placer County history leads to gold, from its namethe Spanish term for goldbearing gravelto the mining camps that sprouted overnight in its rugged river canyons. Ecstatic cries of Gold on the American River in 1848 launched the largest voluntary migration in the history of the world. As claims panned out, thousands of miners swarmed like locusts between the roughandtumble mining camps, from the crest of the Sierra Nevada to the Sacramento Valley. Some camps disappeared along with the easy placer gold; others found new methods to extract gold deposited deep in quartz veins or underground and developed into stable towns that still stand. Sometimes washing whole hillsides into rivers, hydraulic mining was outlawed in the 1880s, but the colorful characters and tall tales of the Gold Rush live on. Bob Hampton of Placer $27.77 It was not an uncommon tragedy of the West. If slightest chronicle of it survive, it must be discovered among the musty and nearly forgotten records of the Eighteenth Regiment of Infantry, yet it is extremely probable that even there the details were never written down. Sufficient if, following certain names on that long regimental roll, there should be duly entered those cabalistic symbols signifying to the initiated, Killed in action. After all, that tells the story. In those oldtime Indian days of continuous foray and skirmish such brief returns, concise and unheroic, were commonplace enough. Yet the tale is worth telling now, when such days are past and gone. There were sixteen of them when, like so many hunted rabbits, they were first securely trapped among the frowning rocks, and forced relentlessly backward from off the narrow trail until the precipitous canyon walls finally halted their disorganized flight, and from sheer necessity compelled a rally in hopeless battle. Sixteen, ten infantrymen from old Fort Bethune, under command of Syd.
