The game of poker takes only a few minutes to learn but a lifetime to master. For all you trying to learn texas hold em out there, this article should take you through the basics of what you need to know to get you playing.
The first thing you need to learn about poker is the hand rankings. There are a total of 52 cards in a poker deck, consisting of four suits: spades, hearts, diamonds, and clubs. Each suit has a total of thirteen cards - cards 2 through 10 are worth their face value, then face cards go in the following order: jack, queen, king, ace. The ace is the highest ranking of the thirteen cards. After high card comes one pair. A pair consists of two of the same card. The king of clubs and the king of spades would be a pair. The two of clubs and the two of diamonds would also be a pair. After one pair comes two pair. If you have the queen of spades, the queen of diamonds, the three of hearts, and the three of clubs you would have two pair. Three of a kind beats two pair.
A player holding the ace of spades, clubs, and diamonds would have three of a kind. This brings us to the straight. A straight is five cards in a row. The best straight would be the 10, jack, queen, king, and ace of varying suits. The ace can be used as a low card for straight as well. Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5 would be a straight. Straights do not wrap! Jack, queen, king, ace, 2 is not a straight. Flushes beat a straight. A flush would be five cards of the same suit. If you have five spades you have a flush. The full house beats the flush. A full house would be the ace of spades, hearts, and clubs and the five of clubs and diamonds. Four of a kind beats the full house. The ace of spades, hearts, clubs, and diamonds would be four of a kind. Finally we have the straight flush. The straight flush, as the name implies, would be a straight in the same suit. 2,3,4,5,6 of spades is a straight flush. 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace of spades would be the best straight flush in the game, also known as a royal flush.
After you understand hand rankings you graduate up to understanding betting. If you are playing Texas hold em, there will be two players at the table who have to place what are known as blinds before the cards are dealt. Blinds are forced bets made by the two players sitting directly to the left of the dealer. The player directly to the left of the dealer has to place ½ the size of the bet into the pot before seeing any cards. This is known as the small blind. The player directly to the left of the small blind is known as the big blind, and has to place the full size of the bet into the pot before seeing any cards.
Once the cards have been dealt, the first player to decide whether he wants to play or fold is the player directly to the left of the small blind. This player has three options. He can either call the bet, meaning he places the bet into the pot, fold meaning he gets rid of his cards, or raise, meaning he puts a minimum of two times the bet into the pot. This continues around the table until we reach the small blind. The small blind must put the other ½ into the pot to continue on with the hand, unless a player has raised, in which case the small blind as well as every other player at the table has to put the same amount of chips into the pot to see more cards. If no one has raised the big blind can simply check and now we have the flop.
The flop consists of three cards face up in the middle of the table. These three cards in the middle of the table are combined with the two cards that are face down in front of the player. Betting begins with the small blind. If the small blind is no longer in the hand the first to bet would be the big blind unless the big blind folded then its the player directly to the left of the big blind. After all the players have bet or checked, we move on to the turn. The turn is one more card face up in the middle of the table. Betting order is the same as it was on the flop, starting with the small blind. After this round of betting we have our final card placed face up in the middle of the table known as the river. After everyone has bet the remaining players turn the two cards in front of them over to see who has the best hand. The player with the best hand wins the pot.
If you're starting out, I suggest playing online first to allow yourself to become acquainted with betting order as the computer will automatically place your blinds for you as well as ensure that the betting order is followed in a clockwise fashion. There are many free services available for you to learn on and this can be a much simpler as well as less angry way to learn the game of texas hold em.
