Silver is one of the most beautiful and popular precious metals. It is, however, very soft and easily bashed out of shape, which is why most silver jewellery is made out of sterling silver - a combination of silver and another metal, usually copper. This means that the strength of the silver is increased, but it also means that it is more likely to tarnish because copper is more reactive. In this guide, we will show you the top ways to keep your sterling silver sparkling.
1. Baking Soda: Mix water and baking soda into a paste. Rub, rinse, and polish dry with a soft cloth.
2. Aluminum Foil, Baking Soda, and Salt: Line a pan with a piece of aluminium foil, add enough water to cover the jewellery, add 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon salt, and bring to the boil. Add sterling silver jewellery, boil for 2-3 minutes. Rinse, dry, and buff with a soft cloth. This method cleans the design and crevices of silver pieces.
3. Toothpaste: Coat the silver with toothpaste, run it under warm water, work it into a foam, and rinse. For stubborn stains or intricate grooves, use a soft-bristled toothbrush.
4. Tomato Sauce or Brown Sauce. Soak sterling silver jewellery in either of these sauces for 10 minutes and then wash with soapy water. Once dry, polish up gently using a polishing cloth.
5. Malt vinegar. This is the active ingredient in Tomato and Brown Sauce. Pour 100ml of malt vinegar into a kettle, fill up with water, place the sterling silver jewellery inside and boil. This method will also clean your kettle. Rinse both the kettle and jewellery thoroughly afterwards. Alternatively, use a pan to boil the vinegar.
6. Coke. Pour one can over tarnished silver in a bowl and leave for 12 hours. Rinse and polish.
7. Polishing. Clean your sterling silver jewellery with a soft cotton cloth or flannel cloth if you do not have a polishing cloth. Rub with a lengthwise motion, never clean in a circular motion because this may cause scratches due to the softness of silver. Paper, polyester, and coarse fabrics often contain wood fibres or synthetics that can cause tiny scratches in the surface of your sterling silver jewellery.
8. Liquid detergent To remove light dirt, use a small amount of mild liquid detergent to half a cup of warm water and rinse thoroughly with water. Dry thoroughly. To clean excess tarnish, clean with a soft cloth and a non-abrasive brand name liquid or paste silver polish.
9. Simple regular cleaning. By periodically cleaning your jewellery using sensible methods, such as warm water and a soft cloth, means that tarnish will not have time to build up. Through regular cleaning, tarnish and dirt will be kept to a minimum ensuring that your sterling silver jewellery stays in top condition.
10. Prevention. This may not be strictly a cleaning method, but it will ensure you get the most from your jewellery, and is by far the most effective. By making sure that sterling silver pieces are kept together, and separate from other types of jewellery, such as gold jewellery minimises the tarnish that can be built up on it, and reduces the risk of scratches. Also, by taking practical steps like not wearing jewellery until you need to (e.g. after showering, putting perfume/after shave on) means that your sterling silver jewellery will shine for that little bit longer.

The process was widely used from 1609 through the 1800s; it is no longer used. The patio process had been used to extract silver from ore since its invention in 1557. One drawback of the patio process was the long treatment time, usually weeks. Alvaro Alonso Barba invented the faster pan process (in Spanish the cazo or fondo process) in 1609 in Potosi, Bolivia, in which ore was mixed with salt and mercury (and sometimes copper(II) sulfate) and heated in shallow copper vessels. The treatment time was reduced to 10 to 20 hours.
