The American Quarter Horse: Faster than a speeding Thoroughbred

The Quarter Horse is known as the All-American horse and the horse most versatile of the world. Not only is it the most popular breed in the United States, but it is perhaps the oldest breed of horses in the United States. Named for its speed amazing in a short sprint quart mile, the fastest speed galloping a horse that has been done by the American Quarter Horse, which was clocked at speeds near 55 mph (88 km / h) in a quarter mile or less. Their powerful hind legs can propel the horse into a gallop almost a standing start, and Quarter Horse racing is becoming more popular. The average quarter horse usually lives 20 years, but 35 years is not uncommon when is properly supported.

It has been called by several names over the years: American Quarter Horse, Foundation Quarter, Quarter Standard, Racing quarter, Running Quarter, the district Miler, short horse and the cowboy Cutting Horse.

While race has its origin in the United States and is now distributed worldwide, its ancestry back to the Arab, Barb and Turk horses that were imported to America by early Spanish explorers, the conquistadors and traders. They were combined in the race Chickaswas by Native Americans to form one side of the line, with thoroughbred horses English and another. Morgan and Standardbred horses have also been used in the development of the breed. But it is difficult to give origin accurate, because mixing lines to produce a short horse began in the colonial areas before the Revolutionary War. Real debut are believed to have been in the Carolinas and Virginia, but the principle was the development in the southwest United States, the Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, eastern Colorado, Kansas and when in the early 1600s, settlers began to import English horses and raise them to the native Spanish-based Chickaswas stock to create a hard all-purpose horse.

Of course, naming the horses after the people were common practice at the time and where the horses were sold their names were often changed. This led to confusion when checking genealogies. Today the name of a horse shall be acceptable to the American Quarter Horse Association and must not exceed 20 characters. Quarter Horse names can be reused only if certain criteria are met by the rules of the AQHA.

And no special attention has been made to keep them as a distinct race, either. Fast horses have raced in all suitable open space with many races running as "match racing "after a private bet between owners or riders. Any of these fast horses who presented their horses have good cow mares were crossed to exist. Many of these mares had a history of Spanish, Arabian, Morgan, or Standardbred.

In 1889, travelers, a horse of unknown origin, was shipped to Texas in a wagon horses, but we think it comes from Kentucky. Traveler is apparently not been considered useful and at least once changed hands in a game of craps. He and his descendants were bred to mares excellent Quarter Horses and many can now go back to him along the paternal side.

Currently there are two basic varieties of race. Foundation Quarter, Standard quarter or the former "Bulldog" type is the shorter the smaller stockiest, more variety of muscle but very agile and sure-footed. Used for ranch work, trail and driving pleasure, they are averaging 14 to 15 hands and weigh from 900 to 1100 pounds. The district race, racing quarter is bigger, thinner and more like a muscular thoroughbred because of the added value of Thoroughbred genes. These average 15 to 16 hands and weigh 1000-1250 pounds and tend to be solid color with white markings limited.

American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), the largest equine breed registry in the world, founded in 1940, has recorded more than 5 million American Quarter Horses with the current population estimated to 3.2 million animals.

The breed is generally recognized by a short muzzle, broad forehead, with a straight profile and large jaws. It has small ears and large eyes fox apart. The neck has a slight ridge. They have a short back with good withers and a sloping croup. The gun is lowered with well sprung ribs and hoofs are well rounded, with deep open heels. The following 13 colors are accepted by the AQHA: brown, brown, gray, dun, dun red, bay, buckskin, black, grullo, red roan, blue roan, and palomino, sorrel to be the most popular brands and limited white.

The walk, trot, canter, and gallop are the natural gaits of the Quarter Horse. Some people have long legs with long strokes lot of action at the knee, then other smaller steps.

As for the disposition and personality, this horse is the most prepared, relaxed and calm mood equally in all races, and has a gentle nature. They are fast and agile, lucid and sensible, sure-footed and stable with good endurance. Their unflappable nature made suitable for the mounted police units in cities. Intelligence, reliability, adaptability and willingness to please their owners Quarter Horses are the most easily trained by all means. The race seems to have a "sense of the cow" innate and can anticipate the moves made by livestock that makes it indispensable for herding and cutting.

There is a downside to the race, however, a genetic quirk called paralysis periodic hyperkalemic (HYPP). She is listed as a genetic defect in the rules of the AQHA, along with Parrot mouth cryptorchidism. HYPP is inherited as a dominant trait and is characterized by intermittent episodes of uncontrolled muscle tremors (shaking, trembling or shaking) or profound muscle weakness, and in severe cases can lead to collapse and / or death. To date, HYPP has been traced only the descendants of a horse named IMPRESSIVE, # 0767246.

They are indeed a horse all-purpose with uses ranging from racing, raising and rodeo, show jumping, dressage, carriage and driving pleasure.
