There are some preachers saying that the Ten Commandments are no longer valid in the Christian life. Some people say that the Ten Commandments are never to pass away and we need to obey them. Where do you stand on this? Let have a look.
When Jesus came to earth he lived a life that was free of sin. In other words Jesus did everything that you could do in life right and he did nothing that would have broken the Mosaic Law. Jesus was perfection in a man. Jesus was also God incarnate and not only did he obey the Law, he added to it and made the obeying His new commandments something that are impossible to achieve.
Let us agree on this:
- It is impossible for an honest Christian to obey all the Ten commandments even when they have the Holy Spirit
- We are not God on earth as humans.
- The more we think of sins that we should not do, the more we seem to do them
- Sometimes it seems we are powerless to be sin free.
- The commandments of Jesus are near impossible to do if we are honest.
So what is the point of the Law of the Old Testament and the new Law that Jesus brought to us in the Gospels?
They are both to bring us to our knees in repentance and with an attitude that says, "Jesus there is no way I can do all of this?
This is the point of the Law. To destroy any idea that we think we are worthy of heaven. If you have any person that is full of self righteousness, all you need to do is expound the Law to him and have him confronted with the fact that he just can't meet the requirements.
Once we are humble and we tell Jesus we can't do it on out own and we beg for help, Jesus can empower us though the Holy Spirit and give us the strength supernaturally to conquer sins and temptations that come to us.
We should not be looking at the Law of the OT, but we should be living as the Holy Spirit directs us.
The Law will never pass away. It exists to convict sinners of their need for Christ, but we are exhorted to live under grace and the power of the Holy Spirit.
