If you are looking to shed some pounds or maintain your current weight loss, a digital food scale can be a powerful tool in your arsenal against fat. By weighing out the food that you plan to eat, you are assured that you are keeping portions under control and that your food diary or other calorie counting method is accurate. When dieting, it is essential that you stay within a particular number of calories, and if you are just guessing at the portions of food that you eat - you may be underestimating the amount of food that you are taking in. The digital food scale is also a great tool for the busy cook or for diabetics.
Losing Weight
While you should always consult with your physician when dieting, most doctors will ask that you eat fewer than 2,000 calories each day in order to lose weight. This will vary from person to person depending on your own medical situation. Weight loss occurs when you consume fewer calories than you burn. With a digital scale, you can easily weigh your portions out in order to better and more accurately determine the number of calories for each item that you eat. As an added benefit, being able to see the weight of the food and determine the caloric value of the food is a great incentive to avoid overindulging at the dinner table.
Cooking
Even for those who are not worried about maintaining or losing weight, the digital food scale is a great tool in the kitchen when cooking. Because many recipes will call for a particular number of ounces of a certain ingredient, a food scale will allow you to see (usually down to the tenth of an ounce on a digital readout) how many ounces you are adding. Using a scale when cooking is far easier than using a measuring cup; measuring cups may not be as accurate for certain types of ingredients.
For the Diabetic
Counting calories is very important for the diabetic because of the need to control their blood sugar. Many diabetics count their calories, among other nutritional facts like sugar and carbohydrates, in order to maintain their disease and avoid becoming insulin-dependent. A digital food scale can certainly help in that quest.
Cost of Scale
A digital food scale is more accurate than a traditional food scale, and doesn't really cost that much. A low end scale of this type may cost less than $20, while a high end model that not only weighs your food but also gives you the number of calories, sodium, potassium, carbohydrates, cholesterol and more information about the food can be purchased for less than $100 - which is a great investment for the calorie counter, cook, or diabetic.
Digital food scale information can be found all over the internet. Digital food scales help you weigh your food.

A Tenth of a Second $25 In the late fifteenth century, clocks acquired minute hands. A century later, second hands appeared. But it wasn’t until the 1850s that instruments could recognize a tenth of a second, and, once they did, the impact on modern science and society was profound. Revealing the history behind this infinitesimal interval, A Tenth of a Second sheds new light on modernity and illuminates the work of important thinkers of the last two centuries.   Tracing debates about the nature of time, causality, and free will, as well as the introduction of modern technologies—telegraphy, photography, cinematography—Jimena Canales locates the reverberations of this “perceptual moment” throughout culture. Once scientists associated the tenth of a second with the speed of thought, they developed reaction time experiments with lasting implications for experimental psychology, physiology, and optics. Astronomers and physicists struggled to control the profound consequences of results that were a tenth of a second off. And references to the interval were part of a general inquiry into time, consciousness, and sensory experience that involved rethinking the contributions of Descartes and Kant.   Considering its impact on much longer time periods and featuring appearances by Henri Bergson, Walter Benjamin, and Albert Einstein, among others, A Tenth of a Second is ultimately an important contribution to history and a novel perspective on modernity. |

The Tenth Parallel $5.99 A riveting investigation of the jagged fault line between the Christian and Muslim worldsThe tenth parallel—the line of latitude seven hundred miles north of the equator—is a geographical and ideological front line where Christianity and Islam collide. More than half of the world’s 1.3 billion Muslims live along the tenth parallel; so do sixty percent of the world’s 2 billion Christians. Here, in the buzzing megacities and swarming jungles of Africa and Asia, is where the two religions meet; their encounter is shaping the future of each faith, and of whole societies as well. An award-winning investigative journalist and poet, Eliza Griswold has spent the past seven years traveling between the equator and the tenth parallel: in Nigeria, the Sudan, and Somalia, and in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. The stories she tells in The Tenth Parallel show us that religious conflicts are also conflicts about land, water, oil, and other natural resources, and that local and tribal issues are often shaped by religious ideas. Above all, she makes clear that, for the people she writes about, one’s sense of God is shaped by one’s place on earth; along the tenth parallel, faith is geographic and demographic. An urgent examination of the relationship between faith and worldly power, The Tenth Parallel is an essential work about the conflicts over religion, nationhood and natural resources that will remake the world in the years to come. |

The Tenth Muse $39.95 This book brings together two major strands of research: the exploration of early film criticism and theory and cinema's impact on literary texts, including the work of H.G.Wells and Virginia Woolf. It also offers new research on early writings about film, including the work of the women film critics who rose to prominence in the 1920s, and on film societies and film journals in the period. - ;The Tenth Muse explores writings on the cinema in the first decades of the twentieth century. Laura Marcus examines the impact of cinema on early twentieth-century literary and, more broadly, aesthetic and cultural consciousness, by bringing together the study of the terms and strategies of early writings about film with literary engagement with cinema in the same period. She gives a new understanding of the ways in which early writers about film - reviewers, critics,. theorists - developed aesthetic categories to define and accommodate what was called 'the seventh art' or 'the tenth muse' and found discursive strategies adequate to the representation of the new art and technology of cinema, with its unprecedented powers of movement. In examining the writings of early film critics and commentators in tandem with those of more specifically literary figures, including H.G.Wells and Virginia Woolf, and in bringing literary texts into this field, Laura Marcus provides a new account of relationships between cinema and literature. Intertwining two major strands of research - the exploration of early film criticism and theory and cinema's presence in literary texts - The Tenth Muse shows how issues central to an. understanding of cinema (including questions of time, repetition, movement, vision, sound and silence) are threaded through both kinds of writing, and the ways in which discursive and fictional writings overlapped. The movement that defined cinema was also perceived as a more fragile and unstable ephemerality that inhered at every level, from the fleeting nature of the projected images to the vagaries of cinematic exhibition. It was the anxiety over the mutability of the medium and its exhibition which, from the 1920s onwards, led to the establishment of such institutional spaces for cinema as the London-based Film Society, the new film journals, and, in the 1930s, the first film archives. The Tenth. Muse explores the continuities between these sites of cinematic culture and the conceptual, literary and philosophical understandings of the filmic medium. - ;a rich and detailed survey of early film writing... an illuminating book - Muriel Zagha, Times Literary Supplement;this wide-ranging book is a stimulating survey of the evolving connections between the moving image and the written word. - Simon Cooper, The Financial Times Magazine |

The Tenth Chamber $5.99 In The Tenth Chamber, Glenn Cooper introduces us to a new hero, Luc Simard, an archaeologist with a flawless academic career and a flawed history with women. When a book dating to the fourteenth century is found after a fire in a monastery in the Perigord region of France, Luc's old friend Hugo calls him in to help decipher the mysterious illustrations that dot the coded manuscript. The illustrations remind Luc of the cave paintings the Perigord region is famous for, but neither man can make any sense of the text's message, save for the fact that it claims to be written by a 200-year-old monk. What Luc and Hugo do find in the manuscript is a map that leads them to a ten-chambered cave that is beyond their wildest expectations. The cave's walls are painted with images far more detailed and advanced than those at Lascaux, yet there are clues that suggest this cave is more than 10,000 years older. Theirs is the discovery of a lifetime. The secret of the cave lies in the coded pages of that fourteenth-century manuscript, but it's a secret that someone is willing to kill to protect. |

In the Tenth House $12.99 London, 1896: Dr. Ambrose Gennett can’t shake the fear that gripped him when he heard her voice. On the train platform in Kensington, he went to the aid of a woman hurt in an accident. He didn’t know her, but she knew him–she saw things he had never revealed to anyone. She spoke prophecy and then disappeared into the crowd. Gennett is a “mad doctor,” one of the few physicians in London aware of the new Freudian theories of the mind. His confidence shaken by the encounter, Gennett vows to find this young woman again, partly to help her and largely to prove to himself that she is not as supernatural as she seems. She has to be either mistaken or mad. The truth is much worse. Lily Embly is a fake medium but a real psychic–or at least she believes she is. Struggling to free herself from a lifetime of poverty and schooled as a charlatan by her mother, Lily works the strings and magnets of trickery at séances that have become wildly popular in Victorian England. Her false spirit messages are guided by the tarot cards and horoscopes she consults in secret. But when her mother falls ill, debt threatens to destroy them both. Desperate, Lily has teamed up with a dangerous con man, Monsieur St. Aubin, to pull off a risky–and potentially very lucrative–séance. And when Gennett discovers that his own sister has fallen under the sway of the spiritual frenzy that has gripped the city, his sanity depends on exposing Lily as a fraud. Only one can be right, and only one will survive. Richly atmospheric, In the Tenth House conjures up a world of obsession and passion; it transports readers to an era that saw science and faith collide. Full of wit, insight, and fascinating historical detail, it is an astonishing debut. From the Hardcover edition. |
